Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS), commonly known as “Sleeping Beauty Syndrome,” is a rare parasomnia characterised by recurring episodes of excessive sleepiness (hypersomnia)

In addition to extreme drowsiness, KLS can cause behavioural changes and confusion

While the condition can affect anyone, it is most commonly seen in teenage boys

Episodes of KLS can come and go over long periods, sometimes lasting up to a decade

During these episodes, individuals may sleep for up to 20 hours a day

Other symptoms may accompany these episodes, including hallucinations, disorientation, irritability, childish behavior, increased appetite, and heightened sexual drive

These episodes can recur suddenly and unpredictably, with weeks, months, or even years between occurrences

It can also trigger anxiety and depression, primarily because you don't know when an episode will occur or how long an episode will last.

People with KLS are typically considered to be “cured” when they haven't had an episode for six or more years
