So who was he? Born in the south of France in 1503, Michel de Nostradame was the son of a prosperous Jewish family

His family later converted to Catholic Christianity. Nostradamus studied at the University of Avignon, but was forced to leave because of a plague outbreak

He then worked as a physician and began his medical practice in the 1530s, although he did so without a medical degree

He began making prophecies about 1547 and published them in a book. In the text of his book, each four-line block, called a quatrain, attempts to predict the future

The predictions do not follow chronological coherence and were written combining French, Greek, Latin and Occitan

It is believed that it contains anagrams, mythological and astrological references, in a language that makes comprehension difficult

He suffered from severe gout towards the end of his life, which eventually developed into edema. He died in 1566 at the age of 62
