Every day, thousands of tourists throng the picturesque destination to revel in its charm and beauty

However, mass tourism and floods have long been a problem for the fragile lagoon city

That's why Venice has now begun charging day trippers, a five-euro entry fee to protect it from the adverse effects of over-tourism

The fee is applicable only on select dates between April 25 and July 14

Tourists planning a day visit to Venice during these dates can prepay the entry fee online and obtain a QR code

Visitors aged under 14 won't need to be registered and access for them will be free of charge

Tourists staying in Venice, who already pay an overnight tax for the privilege, are exempt from the new tickets

Mayor Luigi Brugnaro described this measure as an "experiment" to safeguard the city

Officials in the city estimate an average of 50,000 people a day visit Venice, an influx that almost matches the resident population

The city was also under pressure from UNESCO, which had threatened to add Venice to its World Heritage in Danger list in 2023
