Prisons are usually built on huge parcels of land, with ability to hold thousands of prisoners - like Klong Prem in Thailand and Metro West in Florida

But UK holds the distinction of having the smallest prison in the world, which can only hold two inmates

It is built on Sark Island, nestled between the UK and France, which is under 5 km long and 1.6 km wide, according to its official website

The prison by the same name (Sark Prison) was built in 1856 and can hold two prisoners. An equal number of policemen are on prison duty

In 1832, the court ordered the construction of this jail, but it was completed in 24 years because no one had the money to build it

In later years, the building was divided from the middle, which led to the creation of two rooms

One room is six by six feet while the other is six by eight. And both rooms have thin wooden beds

Since no major crime takes place on the island, it has become a tourist spot

The most famous criminal here is Andres Gardes, a nuclear physicist who decided to invade Sark Island claiming himself as the rightful heir

But a cop thwarted Gardes' plan by punching him in the face and seizing his semi-automatic rifle. He was arrested and the gun is now part of Sark Museum
