A Tour of The French Quarter

Pondicherry, officially called Puducherry, is often referred to as the French Riviera of the East. The French Quarter still withholds its rich legacy.

Pondicherry city is divided into two major segments - White Town or French Quarter and Black Town or Tamil/Indian Quarter.

Hire a scooty and set out to explore the French Quarter. The primary four streets are Rue Dumas, Rue Romain Rolland, Rue Suffren and Rue La Bourdonnais.

Everywhere you go, you will come across bright, colourful villas, cafes and boutiques representing old-style Colonial architecture.

The French Quarter is also adorned with tree avenues and quirky wall graffiti that make this side of town popular with locals and tourists.

For some sightseeing, visit one of the many churches to get a taste of gothic architecture featuring glass stained walls and ornate ceilings.

Amidst French structures, lies this Greco-Roman monument called Aayi Mandapam. Legends say it is named after a famous courtesan - 'Aayi'.

The French Quarter overlooks the Promenade Beach or Rock Beach. Head there for an evening walk and
to catch great views of the sea.

While at the seafront, find yourself a nice spot by the rocks and watch a spectacular sunset. It's a must-do!

If all the touring around gets you hungry, then head to Le Cafe, the only seafront cafe, to relish French and Indian treats. It's an institution.
