BJP workers display a huge cut-out of Narendra Modi during a protest against the Election Commission, in New Delhi on Thursday.

Several political leaders today condemned the BJP's protest in Varanasi against the denial of permission to a Narendra Modi rally in the city. For about three hours, party workers shouted slogans and protested against the Election Commission at the Lanka Gate outside the Banaras Hindu University, led by top leaders Arun Jaitley and Amit Shah.

  • BJP has become desperate. I don't know why. It only diminishes the individual who attacks the Commission. The Election Commission is doing a splendid job.
    P Chidambaram, Finance Minister
  • BJP top brass landed in Kashi. Shows their nervousness. Will they be able to save Modi ji from defeat?
    Arvind Kejriwal, AAP chief
  • They are doing this to give Hindu-Muslim colour to elections in remaining seats to take political mileage.
    Mayawati, BSP chief
  • Don't try and whip up communal frenzy hoping it will give you electoral gains in the last phase of the election.
    Sitaram Yechury, CPI(M) leader
  • Kashi has just seen a nautanki, a farce by Arun Jaitley and Amit Shah. They could not bear heat of Varanasi.
    Ashutosh, AAP leader
