Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav today created a huge controversy with his comments questioning the death sentence handed out to three men who were convicted of two gang-rapes in Mumbai last week. "Should rape cases be punished with hanging? They are boys, they make mistakes," he said today while campaigning for the national election.
- Rape isn't a small mistake, can't be forgiven. But I am against death penalty too.Medha Patkar, Aam Aadmi Party
- Unfortunate for Mulayam to make such statements. No question of coming with false cases, the law recommends to the previous conviction of rape and gang-rape. After long time we could amend laws, stringent punishment and strict laws. I strongly condemn it and disapprove of it.Nirmala Sawant, National Commission for Women
- The biggest bechara will be Mulayam himself. Shows his regressive mindset. He has lost the vote-bank of every woman in this country. It is the vote-bank of hooligans that he is appealing to.Shaina NC, BJP
- This was not one of his Khap panchayats giving judgments. He should give up his position. Should reject political leadership of this kind and throw them out. You have no respect for women therefore there will be no empowerment of women.Vrinda Grover, Women's rights advocate
