Government trying to limit nuclear liability of suppliers? Who said what
New Delhi:

The government has said that it will not violate or subvert a crucial law that makes foreign suppliers liable for an accident if the nuclear equipment they provided malfunctioned.The US has been pressuring India to grants its companies greater protection from liabilities. US President Barack Obama is expected to raise this at next week's meeting with the Prime Minister in New York.

  • Once the matter is taken up at the appropriate level, the decision that will be taken will be done keeping the highest interest of our country in mind, and the highest interest of our country in our mind is that we must not expose ourselves to unlimited liability for which somebody else should be responsible. We have to do this with a practical understanding that nobody's forcing this decision on us , this is the decision that we are taking in the public interest.

  • We will not compromise and there is no question of diluting the law. I would like to reiterate that Indian law will definitely be applied whenever any company comes here for the purpose of participating the nuclear reactor building here, we will apply only the Indian law as far as the indemnifying or damages are concerned.

  • To try to dilute the act passes by parliament would be illegal. No one can bypass the law of parliament. Every time the PM goes to Washington, something like that comes up. American companies have had a problem with this clause right from the beginning.
