Harmony meet: Narendra Modi skipped it to avoid questions, says Lalu Prasad Yadav

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh speaks at the harmony meet

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today called a meeting of the National Integration Council in New Delhi in the aftermath of the communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, in which nearly 50 were killed and over 40,000 displaced.

  • Government should do everything to act against those spreading communal violence, no matter how powerful they are. Anyone from any party found involved in such incidents will be punished.
    Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister 23/09/2013
  • NIC provides us with unique ideas for a unique and pluralistic society. We propose to discuss safety of women. No country can progress without respecting its women.
Sushil Kumar Shinde, Home Minister 23/09/2013
  • This meeting should not be about closing the stable door after horse had bolted. My concern is attempt made by "reasonable people" to fan the flames. We need to measure our words. And let's be less hypocritical in our response.
Omar Abdullah, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister 23/09/2013
  • Modi purposely didn't come because he didn't want to face uncomfortable questions. I have asked all secular parties to come together in 2014. I see India being polarised before 2014. Amit Shah, who was the manager of Gujarat riots, is responsible for the Uttar Pradesh riots. He has now reached Bihar. I see riots across the country.
Lalu Prasad Yadav, RJD chief 23/09/2013
  • At present, it seems that some of the main political parties are trying to dangerously harm the communal harmony of the state in view of 2014 general elections. Efforts are on (by them) to polarise people of the state.
Akhilesh Yadav, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister 23/09/2013
  • No religious processions should allow posters or placards or slogan-shouting against another religions.
Nitish Kumar, Bihar Chief Minister 23/09/2013
  • Politicians should focus more on development politics instead of vote-bank politics.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister 23/09/2013
  • The need of the hour is to develop an Indian identity that is founded on a scientific temper, social and economic equality, and a melding of our diverse faiths and cultural practices, which will truly integrate our diversity into unity.
J Jayalalithaa, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister 23/09/2013
  • Telangana was created for political reasons. Congress is responsible for the instability in the state. I was not allowed to raise the issue in the NIC. If I cannot raise issue of national concern, then what is the use of the NIC?
    Chandrababu Naidu, TDP chief 23/09/2013
