A day after his party the Janata Dal (United) was routed in the general election, Nitish Kumar resigned as Bihar chief minister. The JD(U) won just two of Bihar's 40 Lok Sabha seats, while its former partner the BJP won 31 along with its allies.
The polls saw Mr Kumar's arch political rival Narendra Modi winning a decisive mandate to become Prime Minister.
- There is nothing new in it, Nitish Kumar is fond of resigning
Sushil Kumar Modi, BJP leader - It's all a drama, Nitish Kumar has no option but to quit as there was internal rebellion in his party
Ram Vilas Paswan, LJP chief - I did not ask him to resign. The people have rejected him. We are watching the situation
Lalu Yadav, RJD chief - Nitish Kumar hates Narendra Modi, people of Bihar love Narendra Modi, so they punished him
Ravi Shankar Prasad, BJP leader - Good that he resigned, he got a drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls, lost the mandate
Yashwant Sinha, BJP leader - What kind of decision is this? I don't agree with it
Sunil Pandey, Janata Dal (United) leader - Jo unhone ne Modi ji ka apmaan kiya tha uska jawaab janta ne unhe de diya hai
Rajiv Pratap Rudy, BJP leader
