Kishtwar violence: J&K government should be dismissed if there is no proper probe, says Mayawati

New Delhi/Srinagar: The communal violence in Kishtwar last week has now snowballed into a major controversy with the BJP attacking the Omar Abdullah-led Jammu and Kashmir government over delayed action. Mr Abdullah's party has invoked the riots in Gujarat in 2002 to fend off allegations regarding the conduct of one of its leaders, Sajjad Kichloo, who has resigned as the junior Home Minister following the deadly clashes.
  • Need a high-level probe into Kishtwar violence... if there is no proper probe, J&K government should be dismissed.
Mayawati, President, Bahujan Samaj Party 12/08/2013
  • The order banning me from entering the state is indefinite and open-ended... The state of J&K is not a personal property of one family. It is an integral part of India and you will have to decide how it will be governed.
Arun Jaitley, senior leader, BJP 12/08/2013
  • I have received Sajaad Kitchloo's resignation asking to be relieved of his responsibilities pending the outcome of the judicial inquiry... Would Jaitley be so kind as to inform Parliament whether the Gujarat Home Minister or MOS Home resigned or even offered to in 2002!
Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister, Jammu and Kashmir 12/08/2013
  • I am innocent, I have done no wrong, my conscience is clear... I take strong exception to what Mr Arun Jaitley said. Did Modi resign after Godhra? Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones at others.
Sajjad Kichloo, Minister of State for Home, J&K 12/08/2013
  • In 2002, Gujarat did not allow people to come to Ahmedabad and did not deploy the Army.
Farooq Abdullah, senior leader, National Conference 12/08/2013
  • The government is ready to make a statement on Kishtwar situation, we aren't fighting shy.
P Chidambaram, Union Finance Minister 12/08/2013
  • The judicial inquiry ordered does not inspire confidence... Central intervention is necessary and normalcy has to be restored at the earliest.
    Sitaram Yechury, CPM leader 12/08/2013
  • Can under Section 144A, a leader of the stature of Mr Arun Jaitley be stopped in Jammu?
Ravi Shankar Prasad, BJP spokesperson 12/08/2013
