The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has lambasted the working of the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) in Gujarat, which is aimed at fighting malnutrition among children, saying that every third child in the state is underweight. While the BJP has defended state government, Congress and other parties have slammed the Gujarat government and Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
- I'd like to defend it only on facts; no politicalisation as the Opposition might try to do. In the first instance, let us understand that one out of two children in this country are malnourished that means the country's average is 50 per cent. Compared to that even if you go by the CAG report, where the information is slightly dated, it is one out of three so Gujarat fares much better than the country's average.
Jai Narayan Vyas, Gujarat BJP leader 05/10/2013 - Congress shows everything in Gujarat in a bad sense. There is holistic development in the state. What is in the report will be evaluated.
Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, BJP leader 05/10/2013 - The talks of the Gujarat model are quite funny because as we have been saying for very long, and as all indicators show, the Human Development Index is extremely low and that Gujarat is not faring well.
Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Congress leader 05/10/2013 - I saw the CAG report and it's absolutely true. The BJP projects Gujarat as a temple of development and Narendra Modi as the God of development and on this projection they have decided to nominate him for the Prime Minister's position. The CAG report reveals the impurity of both that temple and that God. Every third child is underweight in Gujarat.
Shivanand Tiwari, JD(U) leader 05/10/2013 - With the spectacles he sees, Narendra Modi cannot see poverty. His slogan of 'India First' is India for the corporate. The CAG report has exposed the truth. In Gujarat, manual scavengers are forced to lift human excreta with their hands. He adds injury by saying it is a spiritual task. Can Narendra Modi not see that? He talks about toilets in the nation; the situation in the state is more pathetic.
Brinda Karat, Left leader 05/10/2013 - There is always talk about the Gujarat model and that if Narendra Modi becomes PM he will make the whole country a model of Gujarat. The CAG report proved Modi wrong.Tariq Anwar, NCP 05/10/2013
