Photojournalist gang-raped: Shock and rage in Mumbai

It is very shocking for me. The security of women in Mumbai has changed. I am sure the Mumbai police is very capable of catching the culprits. It is a very sad state that when we talk about drugs, we talk about elite and slums. Our mind-set has to be changed. Mumbai is not the same as it was 20 years ago. We need to involve everyone including civil society in making it safer. I am very confident that the Mumbai Police will crack the case. We need more cops. There was a proposal to have a mandatory guard in railway coaches, this needs to be done. We need more cops, cops on VIP security need to be separate and not taken away for guarding citizens. It is important to provide jobs to young people to include them in society.

Mumbai Police must get to the bottom of yesterday's alleged rape and punish the guilty ASAP. Mumbai takes pride in being a safe city for women.

Mumbai has been known as a safe city but let's not be complacent about it. The quality of the police force in Mumbai has deteriorated. The reason why Mumbai was safer before was because of the kind of policemen we had. It has deteriorated now. There is very little difference in the humanistic attitude of the police constables on the beat and the rapists themselves. The fact that they are wearing uniform doesn't make the more sensitive people.

I don't even know how to react to this story. It's just so shocking and disturbing. My house is, in fact, very close to this place. Like you said, Mumbai is known as a safer city and Delhi is the one that we have maligned the most, but no place in this country seems safe. Dalits are being raped in villages, girls are being raped in buses and trains, inside their houses, by their fathers. I don't know how much of what is going to help. It is disturbing. I think till there is not public humiliation, this sense of pride and courage that these men have, till that is not done away with, nothing is going to change.

What is really shocking is that not only it has happened in Mumbai, but that it happened between 5 and 6 in the evening. That's so horrifying because Mumbai is supposed to be a safe city even at night and that it can happen in the evening, in broad daylight with the people and police around, that is something I cannot digest, that it can happen in Mumbai. This area is in central Mumbai and it is not a secluded area.

It's really not about the time of day, mode of transport or what area you are in to be a victim of rape anymore right? Ghastly news!

Mumbai is shamed by the incident of gangrape last night. We all hang our heads in shame.

Government representatives come and express sympathy but the question is what step is the government taking to stop such incidents?
