The Land Acquisition Bill will be presented in the Upper House tomorrow.
Confronting a united Opposition in Parliament ranged against its ordinance for changes in the land acquisition law, the government today said it will hold discussions in one more attempt to bring all parties on board with its plan. A bill to replace the land ordinance was introduced in the Lok Sabha today where the government does not need the Opposition's support to pass the legislation. However, the ruling NDA government lacks a majority in the Upper House.
The reasoning that ordinances are to circumvent or bypass Parliament is not rational. The UPA took the path several times during their government.
Arun Jaitley, Finance Minister
You (to Arun Jaitley) expect Parliament to rubber stamp your ordinances, you don't send anything to standing committee.
Anand Sharma, Congress
I don't think the bill can be passed in its present form.
Praful Patel, Nationalist Congress Party
There should be a dialogue. Not just protests on the floor of the house.
Kalraj Mishra, BJP
We welcome farmers' suggestions, we will meet a delegation of farmers.
Rajnath Singh, Home Minister
Various protests against the Land Acquisition Bill are happening at various levels, even on the floor of the House. These protests need to be considered by BJP else it will get problematic.
Shashi Tharoor, Congress
Land Acquisition Bill is anti-farmer, we will oppose the ordinance. If they (government) brings it in the House, we will oppose it tooth and nail.
Kamal Nath, Congress
