The Supreme Court today struck down a new law that set a government a role in appointing judges, saying that the law was "unconstitutional".
  • "We are surprised by the verdict of the Supreme Court. The will of the people can be represented through the Parliament, through the legislature only. it cannot be brought to the notice of the whole world by some other means."

D V Sadananda Gowda, Union Law Minister

  • "We will comment on it after we will review through the Supreme Court thoroughly. When this act was brought, there was unanimous support in both the houses."

Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union Minister of Communications and IT

  • "It was not the government's law, it was passed unanimously by Parliament. Four judges have invalidated it and only one judge supported it."

    Mukul Rohatgi, Attorney General

  • "This is a very serious matter I can't say what Parliament will do. The Congress party will officially react."

    Manmohan Singh, Former Prime Minister

  • "Ill-conceived legislation by the NDA government. Arun Jaitley has to concentrate more on his ministry than other ones."

    Kapil Sibal, Congress Leader

  • "What insults me as a citizen of India is that Attorney General states India must adopt Constitutional model adopted by Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia."

    Ram Jethmalani, Senior Lawyer

  • "Government say in appointments of judges is complete anathema to judicial independence."

    Fali S Nariman, Senior Lawyer

  • "I am very happy today. I was very apprehensive over what was happening in the last one year. No appointment of judges was going through."

H R Bhardwaj, Congress Leader and Former Law Minister

  • "There is a need for dialogue between the parliament and the judiciary. If they have said that there is need to bring change in the collegiums system, we welcome it."

Salman Khurshid, Congress Leader and Former Union Minister

  • "The bigger question is what is the role of parliament in making a law? This is not a constitutional crisis but I will say that I hope it does not create a barrier between legislature and judiciary."

Ashivini Kumar, Congress Leader and Former Law Minister

  • "The court has held that this National Judicial Appointments Commission in which the government would get a substantial say in judicial appointments, interferes with the independence of the judiciary and therefore has been declared to be unconstitutional."

Prashant Bhushan, Senior Lawyer and Petitioner

  • "SC judgement on NJAC is historic. The judgement is a great blow to the Central government that is trying to make judiciary committed to itself. This government made Chief Justice as Governor. That was brazen."

    Ashutosh, Aam Aadmi Party Leader
