North-East terror not a priority for Govt: WikiLeaks

New Delhi: A day after whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks posted secret cables about talks between Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi and US Ambassador Timothy Roemer on terrorism, there are some more uncomfortable revelations.

According to a diplomatic cable sent by the US embassy in April 2006, terror in the Northeast was not a priority for the Government of India. It focuses more on jihadis because attacks by Naxalites and Northeast groups remain confined to rural areas, far from New Delhi.

The Naxals generally target security forces or those associated with them and lack external support, which makes them a purely Indian problem, something the government cannot blame on other countries.
