Wikileaks fallout: Strain on US-France relation?

Paris: Wikileaks hogged the headline all across Europe, newspapers like Le Monde in France, Der Speigel in Germany and El Pais in Spain publsihed the revelations.

The whistle-blower website released secret documents in which the US diplomats reportedly say that:
  • French President Niclolas Sarkozy is "touchy" and "authoritarian"
  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel is a weak leader who is not very imaginative and
  • Italian President Silvio Berlusconi is irresponsible

These are the details that have so far amused most but reactions so far have been guarded.

"I think so far these revelations are just funny. There's a lot of noise about nothing and they may change or reveal nothing major," said a French citizen.

While a French-woman said, "Too much information and is this information really accurate? For now that's the question."

The spokesperson of the French government François Barroin has said France expresses solidarity with the US administration while others have said the leaks endanger lives.

The office of President Sarkozy, who has also been called the emperor without clothes, has so far maintained that it will not react to WikiLeaks - a silence of embarrassment perhaps.

While references to Iran, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Turkey have generated a lot of interest, most are waiting to see what more the so called tsunami of revelations will bring out and how concrete it will be.
