Three inmates seized 12 people hostage on Saturday during a prison mutiny in central Brazil, media reports said.
The group was being held in the infirmary of the jail in Aparecida de Goiania, a town of around 500,000 people in the central state of Goias, the G1 news website said.
Local police and prison officials could not be reached for comment.
The mutineers seized a weapon and subdued a security guard but their demands were not known, according to G1.
It identified the hostages as a prison warden, three nurses and eight prisoners who were being treated in the infirmary.
Police rushed to the scene and negotiations were under way, G1 added.
