Cairo: Thirteen people, including two children, died when their ferry collided with a cargo boat in the Nile river north of Cairo on Wednesday, security and hospital sources said.

More than 25 people were on board the river ferry when the accident occurred. Thirteen bodies were pulled out of the water, five passengers were saved and a search was ongoing for seven people still missing, the sources said.

There were many children on the boat, they added. The ages of the two children who died were not known.

Accidents on the Nile and elsewhere off the Egyptian coast are frequent, with many old and rickety boats plying the river.

In the worst such accident in February 2006, an Egyptian ferry sank in the Red Sea, killing more than 1,000 people.
