13 Workers Killed at Power Plant Site in Ecuador

Quito, Ecuador: A sudden collapse at the site of Ecuador's largest-ever infrastructure project has killed 13 people.

The Chinese embassy in Quito confirmed that 10 Ecuadorean and three Chinese workers were killed late Saturday at the construction site of the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric power plant when a wall collapsed.

In a statement, the embassy said a dozen other workers were hurt at the site deep in Ecuador's Amazon, two of them gravely injured.

A tweet from the account of President Rafael Correa offered condolences to the families of those killed.

The Chinese firm Sinohydro is building the 1,500-megawatt power plant, which is expected to cost more than $2 billion. The Chinese embassy called the accident a "painful lesson," and called on all Chinese companies to reflect upon it.
