Australia's official gift to British royal couple Prince William and Kate Middleton on their wedding would be a $25,000 donation in their name to a primary health care service called the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) is a not-for-profit, aerial medical service that provides a 24-hour emergency response to Australians living or working in rural and remote areas. It treats approximately 36,000 patients a year.
The gift is in stark contrast to the country's present in 1981 to Prince Charles and Diana of 20 handcrafted silver platters in a box made from Australian blackwood, according to The Australian.
The new royal couple, who would get married April 29, asked well-wishers to donate to one of 26 of their favourite charities in lieu of giving them gifts.
New Zealand's wedding gift is also believed to be a contribution to the Christchurch earthquake appeal on the couple's behalf.
All donations will be held and distributed by a foundation set up by William and his brother Harry.
Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard and her partner Tim Mathieson are attending the wedding.
