Lima:
The death toll from a bus crash on a treacherous mountain road in southeastern Peru has risen to 26, including several children, police said Sunday.
The bus went off the road and plunged 200 meters (650 feet) late Friday as it was taking pilgrims to a religious festival.
On Saturday, police said at least 19 people were killed, but more bodies were later recovered and the dead now number 26, including six children, the police chief of the town of Cotaruse, Uriel Luque, said.
The accident occurred on a dangerous stretch of highway known as "the seven turns" in the province of Apurimac.
The bus was carrying passengers from Puquio to the town of Chalhuanca to attend a religious festival known as the Lord of Huanca, which each year draws thousands of pilgrims from around the country.
