Peshawar:
Twin blasts today ripped through a food distribution camp for people displaced by anti-militancy operations in northwest Pakistan, killing at least 30 persons and injuring 50 others.
The explosions occurred within 10 minutes of each other at the distribution point set up by the World Food Programme in Kuccha Pakka area, located 30 kms from Hangu city in North West Frontier Province.
The nature of the two blasts could not immediately be ascertained though there were reports that the first one was caused by a suspected suicide bomber.
The second blast was believed to have been caused by a planted explosive device.
State-run PTV reported that 30 people were killed and 50 others injured in the blasts.
Kohat Commissioner Khalid Khan Umarzai said the first blast occurred at noon at the food distribution point, where several people were present.
The second blast, which caused more deaths, went off 10 minutes later when a large number of people gathered at the spot to remove bodies and help the injured. The blasts damaged nearby houses.
The death toll could rise, Umarzai said.
Security forces cordoned off the area and an emergency was declared in hospitals.
No group claimed responsibility for the blasts but suspected Taliban are blamed for such attacks.
The blasts came a day after a suicide bomber struck a hospital in the southwestern city of Quetta, killing 11 people and injuring about 40 others.
The bomber struck when a large number of Shias had gathered at the hospital to protest against the killing of a Shia banker, who was shot by unidentified gunmen.
A suicide car bombing at a crowded market in the Kuccha Pakka area on September 18, 2009 had killed 40 people and injured 60 others.
A large number of people displaced by anti-militancy operations in the Orakzai tribal region live in Kohat and Hangu districts of NWFP. About 300 internally displaced people live in a relief camp in Kuccha Pakka area.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani condemned the blasts and expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attack.
Government and people are determined to defeat terrorism and such gruesome acts cannot deter the resolve of the nation, which remains united to defeat terrorists, Zardari said.
He asked law enforcement agencies to take more measures to protect people from terrorist attacks.
