Dhaka: At least 36 people were killed on Friday when a boat carrying nearly 80 passengers capsized after colliding head-on with a launch in the river Shrigan in Bangladesh's northeastern Kishorganj district, officials said.

"The local rescuers so far retrieved some 36 bodies as searches for more were underway as the trawler upturned after being hit by a passenger ferry," Additional Police Superintendent Anwar Hossain said.

He said the engine boat called trawler was reportedly carrying some 80 passengers as it was plying on a local route when it collided head-on with the launch.

The official said that the death toll might rise. The fresh tragedy came as toll in last week's ferry tragedy rose to 86 in southwestern Bhola district as efforts were still underway to salvage the partly sunken vessel when several more passengers remained missing.
