38 killed in Lanka clashes

Colombo: Running gun battles in the LTTE stronghold in Northern Sri Lanka left at least 35 tiger rebels and three soldiers dead, official said here on Thursday.

As many as seven tiger rebels were killed in Mulaithivu jungles in the LTTE bastion on Wednesday, the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said.

At least three LTTE cadres were reportedly killed along with an army soldier in Palampiddi, Mundimurippu and Palamodai in Vavuniya on Wednesday, the defence ministry said.

On the Mannar front, troops confronted with a group of LTTE cadres in the Nadunkandal area yesterday killing one security personnel, the ministry said.

Separately, troops killed five rebels in clashes at Parappakandal in Vavuniya Wednesday, the military said.

In another confrontation, troops killed four Tamil tigers in two different incidents at Kiribbanwewa in north-east Welioya Wednesday, it said.

At least one tiger rebel was gunned down during clashes in north Janakapura in Welioya yesterday, it said, adding three more were killed and six injured in confrontations in the same area later in the day.

In the second incident at north Janakapura, the army gunned down seven LTTE rebels, including four female cadres, last evening, the MCNS said.

In another incident at Janakapura, security forces killed two LTTE cadres last afternoon, the MCNS said.

As many as two tiger rebels were killed and five injured in confrontations in Mundimurrippu in Vavuniya yesterday, the defence ministry said, adding on the same day troops shot dead one more tiger rebel and injured another in Palampidi in the region.

One soldier was also killed in a LTTE mortar attack yesterday in Palampidi, the MCNS said.
