Mexico City: A magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit southern Mexico on Tuesday, shaking buildings in Mexico City hundreds of kilometers away but so far causing no damage or casualties, officials said.
The quake struck at 2017 GMT in Guerrero state near Xochistlahuaca, close to Mexico's Pacific Coast, the US Geological Survey said.
The epicenter was not far from the border with Oaxaca state, but 300 kilometers (185 miles) away from Mexico City.
"Earthquake alert, pending," the mayor of Mexico City, Miguel Angel Mancera, initially said on Twitter, before later adding: "City review protocol completed. No damage or injuries."
After the alert was issued, residents in the capital poured into the streets.
"We ran out of the building because my son has the quake alert app on his mobile phone, but honestly, I didn't really feel it that much," one Mexico City woman, Amelia Galvan, told AFP.
In Guerrero and Oaxaca states, the quake alert sounded on radio stations and loudspeakers, sparking building evacuations. But authorities there reported no damage or casualties.
