Lagos, Nigeria : At least six people were killed today when a five-storey building under construction collapsed in an upmarket area of Nigeria's biggest city Lagos, a rescue official said.
"We have recovered six dead bodies so far. Six others have also been rescued alive," Ibrahim Farinloye of the state-run National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) told AFP.
Rescue workers were trying to pull out more people from the rubble of the collapsed building in the Lekki district, which has some of the most expensive real estate in the city.
"We still hear cries and voices from the rubble indicating that some people are still trapped," Farinloye said, adding the cause of the collapse was not yet determined.
But it came after the first significant rainfall of the season overnight.
Building collapses happen frequently in densely populated areas of Lagos, largely due to poor workmanship and materials. But they are rarer in wealthier districts.
Many of the buildings that fall down are not subjected to official construction approval.
