60 years of the Red Republic

Beijing: Beijing's planning grand celebrations on October 1, as China - the world's most populous nation - celebrates 60 years as the People's Republic.

Perhaps even Chairman Mao wouldn't recognise the city if he were to come back in the present day. The Capital is appropriately decked up and locked down. With security tighter than ever before, the police and military are more visible.

Police have already closed Tiananmen Square for the grand parade. On Thursday, China will display its military might to the world at the iconic landmark. The message, though subtle, will be important - China can no longer be ignored.
