Chicago:
A severe winter storm that dropped 7-12 inches of snow through the Chicago area resulted in cancellation of nearly 600 flights at the city's airports on Wednesday.
Snowfall continued throughout Tuesday and more snow is expected on Wednesday. The winter storm dumped 7-12 inches of snow on the city and suburbs, affecting visibility on the roads.
Illinois Department of Transportation asked motorists to use public transportation instead of hitting the road as a measure of safety.
About 600 flights were cancelled at O'Hare and Midway airports. At O'Hare, airlines are reporting delays of 90 minutes or more for all flights in and out of the airport, while at Midway, Southwest Airlines canceled all scheduled departures from 10 this morning until 10 am today.
The Chicago Department of Aviation is advising travellers to check their airline's website before leaving for the airport to confirm the status of their flight.
By the time the storm is over, as much as 14 inches of snow could be dumped in some areas and the Department of Streets and Sanitation's full fleet of 275 snow trucks would be on the roads through this time.
The National Weather Service said winds are expected to gust between 30 and 35 miles per hour, stirring up overnight snow. The storm affected rush hour traffic and commuters using public transport had to wait for over 20 minutes for their rides.
Illinois state police said minor accidents and spin-outs were reported on area expressways but no major problems. About 80 schools across the area were closed for the day.
A winter storm warning will be in effect until today morning while a blizzard watch also has been issued for areas around the city.
