Kuala Lumpur: Seven ethnic Indians face the possibility of death penalty after they were charged at a court in Kuala Lumpur for kidnapping a seven-year-old boy and demanding a ransom of one million ringgit.

The boy, who was nabbed while he was on his way to tuitions, was released unharmed four days later after his parents paid the ransom.

The seven friends, mostly self-employed and labourers, did not record any plea after the charge was read to them in Tamil. They told a court interpreter they understood the charge.

They were charged with abducting the boy and wrongfully confining him to get a million ringgit in ransom.

If convicted, each accused could be punished with death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping under the Kidnapping Act, 1961.

The judge ordered four of the accused to be taken to the hospital for medical examination after they alleged they had been abused by the police.

The next hearing of the case has been fixed for May 27 when the results of the medical examination will be mentioned.
