Afghan Forces Retake City Threatened By Taliban
The Taliban pushed deep into Tirin Kot, the capital of Uruzgan province, on Thursday.
Kabul: A Kabul defense official says Afghan forces have retaken most of a southern provincial capital that was nearly overrun by the Taliban the day before.

The ministry's deputy spokesman, Mohammad Radmanish, says the army and police are in control all strategic locations in Tirin Kot, the capital of Uruzgan province.

He says sporadic fighting was only underway today in the city's northeastern neighborhood.

The Taliban pushed deep into Tirin Kot on Thursday, setting off fierce fighting.

Radmanish says more than 80 Taliban fighters have been killed in the past 24 hours as Afghan forces repelled the insurgent attack. He did not provide a casualty toll for Afghan forces or civilians.

After hours of Taliban onslaught, Kabul sent Afghan commandos and reinforcements to Tirin Kot, backed by US airstrikes.
