At least 55 killed in Lanka clashes

Colombo: At least 47 LTTE cadres and eight security personnel were killed in a spate of clashes in Sri Lanka's embattled northern part, officials said in Colombo on Thursday.

While 13 Tamil Tigers were shot dead in Adampan area of Mannar on Wednesday, three soldiers lost their lives in an encounter at Parappakandal area in the region, officials said.

In a separate incident, five rebels were gunned down in Adampan on Wednesday, the Media Centre for National Security said.

The Lanka army killed 10 LTTE cadres in fierce fighting at Periyapandivirichchan area of Vavuniya on Wednesday.

Two soldiers also lost their lives in the encounter, the MCNS said.

Separately, ten Tigers and two soliders were killed in a confrontation in Sinnapandivirichchan area of Vavuniya, the army said.

Meanwhile, Lankan troops attacked a position of the LTTE in the general area north of Kiribbanwewa in North-east Welioya on Wednesday, killing three Tamil rebels in the confrontation, the army said.
