Australia concerned over relations with India

London: Australia is now openly voicing concern over relations between the two countries after the recent spate of attacks on Indians.

During a meeting with his Indian counterpart S M Krishna, the Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said, "We resolved this was a difficult issue which we did not want to get in the way of the good and strong bilateral relationship between Australia and India which we've taken to new levels in the last couple of years. The high-level working group will regularly provide information on investigations and prosecutions."

External Affairs Minister S M Krishna met his Australian counterpart Stephen Smith for the second time in two days in London on Thursday.

The two met on the sidelines of the conference on Afghanistan hosted by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

During the meeting, Krishna is understood to have conveyed India's displeasure over continuing attacks against the community members despite assurances from the Australian government.

There have been 10 attacks in Australia in the last 24 hours. An outraged External Affairs Ministry on Thursday summoned Australian High Commissioner Peter Varghese, ironically a man of Indian origin, for explanation.  (Read: Oz envoy summoned after 10 Indians attacked)

This is arguably India's most aggressive move so far over the attacks against Indians in Australia.
