Australia safe for Indian students: ANZ chief

Melbourne: Expressing deep concern over the recent attacks on Indian students Down Under, chief of a leading bank dubbed the incidents as "totally unacceptable" and said his country was a safe destination for higher education.

Australia and New Zealand banking group (ANZ) chief Mike Smith said Australia is overwhelmingly safe and a welcoming country.

"It is completely unacceptable that small pockets of this kind (racial attacks) of attitude appear to remain in any society," he said.

Australia is a leading destination for the education of a new generation of Indian peoeple with around 100,000 Indian students being enrolled in Melbourne.

"The bottom line in all this is that Australia, because of the good fortune of its geographic position, is part of Asia's growth and it wll be part of India's growth," he said.
