Melbourne: An Australian charged with providing money to a US citizen fighting alongside extremists in Syria has been refused bail.

Hassan El Sabsabi was arrested on September 30 in Melbourne, Australia's second-largest city, after the FBI provided information.

The 23-year-old was charged in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on seven counts of providing an unnamed American with $12,000 to fund his travel to Turkey then Syria. He faces a 25-year prison sentence if convicted.

Magistrate Lance Martin on Monday refused El Sabsabi's bail application, saying the risk of him reoffending or fleeing Australia if released was unacceptable. He will appear in court next in February for a preliminary hearing.
