London: An amateur treasure hunter in Australia has unearthed a gold nugget weighing 5.5 kg, BBC reported on Thursday.
The unidentified man on Wednesday used a hand-held metal detector to find the nugget 60 centimeter underground near Ballarat town in Victoria.
Its value has been estimated at $315,000.
Experts said gold has been prospected in the area for decades, but no such discovery had been made before.
A video of the Y-shaped nugget was posted on YouTube by user "TroyAurum".
He said the man who found it had said it "sounded like the bonnet of a car through the headphones.
