Dhaka:
News reports say security forces have fired rubber bullets and tear gas in Bangladesh's capital to break up an anti-government protest, injuring several people.
The Somoy TV and Ekattor TV stations say the clashes occurred in Dhaka on Wednesday as about 500 demonstrators tried to march in the streets.
The demonstration was called by the main opposition group, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, to protest police firing on activists during a series of nationwide general strikes this week.
The strikes were called after a special tribunal sentenced a top leader of an Islamic party to death for atrocities linked to the country's 1971 independence war.
The party, Jamaat-e-Islami, is an ally of the Bangladesh National Party. The parties say the trial is politically motivated.
