President Barack Obama shakes hands with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at the conclusion of their meeting

Washington: President Barack Obama says he wants to prevent security cooperation from being a source of tension between the U.S. and Pakistan.

Obama spoke after meeting in the Oval Office with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Sharif says that he brought up U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan and that the strikes need to end. The strikes have been a sore point in relations between the two countries.

Obama says fighting terrorism is a challenge and isn't easy. He says he and Sharif discussed security and how they can cooperate in ways that respect Pakistan.

Sharif says they discussed building a constructive relationship with Pakistan's arch-rival India, including on Kashmir.

Obama says Afghanistan and India were also on the agenda.
