Washington:
President Barack Obama is pledging $3 billion from the US for a global fund to help poorer nations deal with climate change.
Obama is announcing the commitment during a speech at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.
Obama says the money will help vulnerable communities create early warning systems and stronger defenses for climate-related issues like storm surges. He says it will also help farmers plant more resilient crops and governments reduce carbon dioxide pollution.
Obama says governments alone can't address climate change. He says citizens must raise their voices to ensure a healthier world.
The US commitment is the largest to date and brings total contributions to the fund to $6 billion. France, Germany and Sweden have also chipped in.
