Bashar al-Assad will remain Syria's president until 2014, may run again: Foreign Minister

Beirut: Syria's foreign minister says Bashar Assad will remain Syria's president at least until scheduled elections in 2014 and may run for another term.

Walid al-Moallem also said in a TV interview on Wednesday that any deal reached at possible peace talks with Syria's opposition would have to be put to a referendum, raising a new condition.

Syria's main opposition group has demanded that Assad's departure from power top the agenda of any talks, tentatively to be launched at an international conference in Geneva next month.

Al-Moallem's comments to the Lebanese station Al-Mayadeen highlighted the gaps between the sides.
