A new biography of Imran Khan has claimed the former international cricketer and slain Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto were romantically involved while they were both students at Oxford University.
The author, Christopher Sandford, also claimed that Bhutto became infatuated with Khan and the pair enjoyed a "close" relationship.
He also alleged that Khan's mother tried, unsuccessfully, to organise an arranged marriage between the pair.
Until now, it had always been believed that Khan and Bhutto had always been at loggerheads both politically and personally. Khan openly criticised the former prime minister just days before her death.
But Pakistan's ruling party, the PPP, has labelled the revelations as "scandalous and malicious" and dismissed the book's claims.
Benazir, a two-time former premier, did not have anything ever to do with Khan while studying in England's famous Oxford University, Pakistan's High Commissioner to Britain Wajid Shamsul Hasan said in a statement.
