Beijing:
India's biggest cultural festival in China got a colourful start in Shanghai today as hundreds of Chinese people attended a classical dance show by Indian artists.
The year-long "Glimpses of India" festival kicked off with a performance by artists from Chennai-based Kalakshetra Repertory Company who staged the dance drama based on scenes from the Ramayana at the prestigious Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre in Shanghai, China's largest metropolis.
The Opera Hall of the Arts Centre was packed with an audience of more than 1,000 local Chinese residents who witnessed the fascinating performance. Senior leaders and officials from Shanghai, and provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang were also present for the performance, the release said.
"It was rare to see such wide participation and many people could not be accommodated due to a big response from local Chinese audiences to the Indian show," Shanghai Consul General, Naveen Srivastava told PTI.
The aim of the festival is to reach local Chinese which was successfully accomplished using social media like Weibo, the Chinese Twitter, he said.
The Kalakshetra troupe will perform tomorrow at the Shanghai Theatre Centre and show case the same in Beijing on May 11 and 12 and Chengdu in May 14 and 15.
The performances will be followed by an Indian Food Festival next week in Shanghai.
The festival would showcase a wide range of events including Indian performing arts, visual and photographic exhibitions, modern art, food, films as well as events involving eminent Indian and Chinese scholars and writers. A Yoga festival is also planned to be held in the next few months.
The "Glimpses of India Festival" was inaugurated today by Ravindra Singh, Secretary Ministry of Culture, along with Cai Wei, Vice Chairman of Shanghai Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
The festival is being organised under the aegis of Year of Friendly Exchanges had a grand opening in Shanghai today with Bharatanatyam and Kathakali dance performances.
The festival will be held in top 12 cities of China including Tibet's provincial capital, Lhasa.
Indian officials say this is by far the biggest cultural festival of India in China which includes a show in Lhasa and Urumqi, the provincial capital of Xinjiang.
The festival is being organised in the backdrop of warming relations between the two countries.
China too is expected to hold a similar festival in India to showcase its rich culture in arts and crafts.
The Chinese cities that will witness activities associated with the festival include Beijing, Chongqing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Hong Kong, Dali, Kunming, Shanghai, Urumqi, Lhasa, and Qingdao.
