Nepal Supreme Court has rejected the plea for acquittal of Charles Gurumukh Sobhraj, the bikini killer of the Hippy Era. The Court delivered its verdict on the sensational murder of American backpacker Connie Jo Bronzich in Kathmandu Valley, in 1975. (Read: Charles Sobhraj - The Nepal connection)
A lower court had found Sobhraj guilty of the murder in 2003, and sentenced him to 20 years in prison. From jail, Sobhraj had moved the apex court in 2006, contesting the sentence.(Read: 'Bikini killer' Charles Sobhraj case: Timeline)
"There is no single evidence against Charles Sobhraj, and no chance of a conviction. All along, authorities in Nepal were prejudiced and biased against Charles Sobhraj," Shakuntala Thapa, Charles Sobhraj's lawyer had said before the hearing.
Lawyer Shakuntala Thapa, is also the mother of 20-year-old Nihita Biswas, the woman Sobhraj plans to marry, once he is free.
"There are facts of the case that need to be studied, more than the face of Charles Sobhraj," said Nihita Biswas, Charles Sobhraj's fiancée.
It is believed, in all Sobhraj murdered 12 to 24 people between 1970 and 1976, in Thailand, India and Nepal.
Most of his victims were tourists from the West, people he befriended.
Yet, ironically Sobhraj is known for a charming persona. Which is the reason why he is portrayed more like a romantic anti-hero, not just a hardened criminal.
"Sobhraj is a tricky guy and has many ideas to escape from his criminality," said Ganesh KC, Chief Investigating Officer, Sobhraj case, Nepal Police.
