Rhode Island:
I had never been in a hurricane before. I was at school when someone said Sandy was going to hit us. I thought it was a joke and did not take it that seriously! I started to tell my mom and her friend how it was going to hit us. Their reaction was that it would not be able to reach us.
Later that day, when my dad came back from work, my mom told him about what was going to happen. We opened the TV and the news channel was on. After all that TV watching we found out it was for sure going to affect us. Luckily, we live in Rhode Island and it would not have such of big impact.
That Sunday night, when I was asleep, we checked our house if the three flashlights we had were working, if we had enough candles, non-perishable food and other important things. The next morning my mom got up early and filled the bathtubs with water in case there is water and power outage. She even filled water bottles.
While we were watching the news suddenly the TV went off. The power was off and I knew Sandy had arrived. The lights came back but weren't here long when the lights went off again. My sister got so freaked out that she ran towards the drawer, got a flashlight out, and ran to my mom. My dad did not go for work so he was in the other room taking a call. My mom told my sister to stay calm and close the flashlight for now.
The winds started to blow so strong that the trees looked like they were not going to stand long. The wind was so strong that a perfectly green shrub was now just a shrub with thread like wood pieces stuck to form one big. Our whole family was wondering watching all this that we ended up making a video. I wanted to experience Sandy so I went out in the patio and believe me I was like 'Gone with the wind'. Holy Cannoli it was heavily raining, cold and for sure windy. The winds were traveling at a speed of at least 45-60 miles per hour. It started getting dark and now it was pitch black.
Now was the time to get those tools (flashlights and candles). After all that we sat down on the couch and started to talk. Much of the stuff we started talking about was 'my mom as a kid and her childhood days'. She told us how she had never liked dark rooms. At this point of time we were playing some games my mom and dad thought of. Now it was time for dinner; we ate rice which we prepared before the power went off, the same with 'sabzi' (an Indian way to say vegetables that are cooked). After dinner we got ready for bed. The power was still not recovered because of Sandy. My dad checked a couple times though. Next day when my dad was off to work we checked it again. Guess What? It was back! Suddenly everything was back to normal and I think the trees must have also felt better.
I guess it was not such a bad experience. I'm sure we can still enjoy Halloween!
