Yaounde: A suicide bomber belonging to Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram killed at least 11 people when he blew himself up close to a mosque in Cameroon near the Nigerian border, military sources and local officials said today.
The attack, which took place late yesterday, occurred after the breaking of the fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
"After the prayer, the faithful gathered under a tent in Djakana," said a local official. "A suicide bomber exploded and killed 11 people. Four others were injured."
Since a regional offensive last year drove the insurgents from most of their strongholds, Boko Haram has been waging a guerrilla-style campaign targeting civilians. In Cameroon, teenage girls have killed dozens in suicide bombings.
The group pledged its allegiance to ISIS last year, although the practical extent of its links with the Syria- and Iraq-based group is not known.
