Brazil: Passengers rescued after executive jet crashes into water

Rio de Janerio: A small executive jet crashed at Rio's domestic airport on Thursday morning, but all three people aboard were rescued without serious injuries.

A spokesman from the Brazilian airport authority said the aircraft landed normally in clear weather, but was unable to stop and skidded off the runway into the sea.

It was not known what caused the accident, and the official spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to discuss the matter.

The Learjet, which was operated by the OceanAir air taxi service, was carrying only three crew members, according to a statement from the company.

It said they suffered no serious injuries.

Television images showed the intact jet floating in the waters of the Guanabara Bay, just a few feet from the runway.

Firefighters could be seen around the aircraft securing it with ropes.

The Santos Dumont airport closed because of the accident, but reopened in the afternoon.
