Rio de Janeiro, Brazil : Residents of a Rio suburb rioted and set fire to buses after a five-year-old boy was shot dead during a police operation, Globo news reported Sunday.

The boy, Matheus Santos Moraes, was struck by a bullet on Saturday. Police say he was hit in crossfire during a confrontation with drug traffickers, Globo reported.

The public safety chief for the Mage area on the northeastern outskirts of Rio de Janeiro called the ensuing violence unprecedented "chaos."

Vinagre called on residents to stay at home until the boy's funeral late Sunday was over.
