Britain-based Non-Resident Indian or NRI Sunil Chopra has been elected as the Mayor of the London Borough of Southwark.
Mr Chopra, General Secretary of the Indian Overseas Congress, London, is the first and only Indian-origin elected councillor in London Borough of Southwark, which constitutes of 1.5 per cent Indian-origin people.
Last year he was elected deputy mayor and following his re-election on May 22 as the Labour Councillor, he was elected as the Mayor. He will assume formal charge on June 7.
Born and brought up in Delhi, Mr Chopra was first the President of College of Vocational Studies in Delhi before moving to the United Kingdom.
During his University days he was the Vice President of Youth Congress Delhi and was President of National Students' Union of India or NSUI, Delhi.
