Britain to tighten system to eliminate bogus colleges

Pune: Britain will "tighten" its educational system to eliminate bogus colleges that are joined by students coming from India, UK Minister for Universities and Science David Willetts said on Tuesday.

"There is a significant abuse of the system and we are getting tough on bogus colleges that dash hopes of young Indians which is also bad for our reputation as educational destination", he said in an interaction with the media.

Willetts said it was estimated that about 12,000 Indian students were studying at university level in Britain and the problem of bogus colleges pertained to those imparting vocational training courses.

He, however, did not quantify the number of such institutions.

The UK universities want to come to India to impart education but the Indian law does not permit that, Willetts noted, adding that "we respect that".

The minister who visited Pune University said "Pune is known for its high quality academic profile and is home to some of the leading research institutions in India. There are several academic and research links between Pune and UK and I am keen that they should be taken to the next level".
