Canadian store owner accused of killing shoplifter

Ottawa: A 62-year-old Winnipeg shopkeeper has been charged with killing a shoplifter, reportedly over a can of luncheon meat, police said today.

Kwang Soo Kim, 62, has been charged with manslaughter in the September 2009 death of Geraldine Beardy, a 29-year-old aboriginal woman, police said.

Police said Beardy was "allegedly involved in a theft and was subsequently confronted" by the owner of a corner grocery store. She was "assaulted and sustained an upper body injury" and "later succumbed to her injuries," police said in a statement.

A friend of the victim told the daily Globe and Mail that the confrontation was over a can of Klik pork luncheon meat valued at less than three dollars.

The case provoked a public debate in Canada on how far store owners should go to fight theft.
